Rod implemented and created the first NCAA regulated and sanctioned college basketball summer league in Los Angeles, better known as the Sayno Classic. In Los Angeles and the Inland Empire, the Sayno Classic has been in operation for over thirty years. Young men have gone from being high school 'phenoms', to college standouts, to professional basketball players in the NBA and overseas.

In 2009, the Sayno Classic basketball summer league has been renamed to the Rod Smith Memorial SNC Summer Leage.
